Teff is the most important ingredient in Ethiopian cooking. It’s one of the world’s oldest grains, it’s gluten-free and rich in minerals, making it perfect for many dishes. One such speciality is injera, the national dish of Ethiopia, a flatbread that we at Abyssinia Restaurant serve with every meal. If you would like to try injera, or any of the delicacies that we serve – for example Ethiopian style lamb roasted with onions, tomatoes and peppers – then we’d love to welcome you along to our restaurant in Munich.

Ethiopia is a land of contrasting landscapes, diverse flora and fauna and a natural, living culture, where the tropical plains meet the high mountains, where monkey puzzle trees and coffee fields come together. Here you can discover the animals of Africa, including zebras, leopards, giraffes, elephants, crocodiles, baboons as well as birds such as eagles and flamingos.

Coffee and Ethiopia go hand in hand. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and we at Abyssinia Restaurant Teff would like to invite you to experience it with us through our traditional coffee ceremony, where the unique aromas of lemon and flowers will inspire you. Several times a day the people of Ethiopia meet with family or friends to enjoy a coffee ceremony – known as a Buna – and you can enjoy one too, with us here on Dachauer Straße in Munich.

Good food has always been my biggest passion. Since I was a child my mother – a teacher and excellent chef – she taught me how to cook. I learned everything that I know from her, everything about food and how to prepare it. From my father, an academic, I gained my thirst for knowledge and my talent as a businesswoman.

I left Ethiopia in 1977 after my education was completed, with a goal of exploring the world, until I finally ended up in Munich. My love for my country and for good food came with me and inspired to me open my own restaurant here on the Dachauer Straße in Munich – Restaurant Abyssinia Teff. The name refers to the first East African monarchy, the Abyssinians, that occupied the current Ethiopia and the cereal Teff, which is not only the most important grain in Ethiopia but also the basis of our national dish, Injera.

Do you want to experience something new? Then it would please me enormously to greet you at my restaurant and to show you the breadth of Ethiopian cuisine.

Best,

Tsion Bellete-Assefa
